The brief for this job was to try to incorporate the letter "T" into the logo and also the colours of the recognised Trans community flags. At the time that this identity was developed the community often used "Trans*" (with an asterisk) when referring to itself because the asterisk is a boolean for transgender, transsexual, etc. The asterisk seemed like an obvious and easily recognisable symbol for this organisation.
